Lochana Nanayakkara qualified in Dentistry from The Royal London Hospital and completed her initial training, to gain a Fellowship in Dental Surgery. She then undertook a 2-year Masters Degree in Conservative Dentistry followed by a 5-year Specialist Training Program in Restorative Dentistry. She was subsequently appointed as a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the Royal London Dental Hospital in 2003.
Since 2010, Lochana has been actively working with the World Federation of Haemophilia (WFH) to improve global access to dental care for people with inherited bleeding disorders. She has held WFH committee and executive positions as Western Europe representative, Secretary and Vice Chair. She was elected Chair of the Dental Committee of WFH in 2022 and is currently continuing for a second term.
In 2014, she launched the Dental Service for the North London Adult Haemophilia Network and provides a comprehensive dental service for people with rare bleeding disorders.
She has published peer review articles and presented nationally and internationally on the dental management of people with inherited bleeding disorders.
Lochana’s other area of professional interest is Education and she has been the Training Programme Director for Dental Core Training in North East London and the Restorative Specialty Training Programme Director for London and South East England.
She is the current Director of Dental Education for BartsHealth NHS Trust, the co-Director of the DClinDent programme in Prosthodontics at Queen Mary, University of London and the Convenor of Dental Education for the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.
